What we collect

Nepali Kura is a news reader. There are no accounts, no sign-in and no database of readers. We do not ask for your name, your email address or your phone number. What the site uses is limited to:

  • Your approximate country, and sometimes the city our host attaches to the connection — never a street address, and never your full IP address. The country picks your regional tab, the currency in the exchange-rate bar, and — until you choose a language — whether the page opens in Nepali (inside Nepal) or English (anywhere else). Country and city are also used, only at request time, to decide whether a house advertisement is meant for your area. None of it is stored or logged.
  • Your own settings, kept on your device: language, light or dark theme, which stories you have loved, which house advertisement you have already closed, and — on the Entertainment tab — which clips you have watched or skipped, so it can suggest others. The same storage also remembers when you last opened each section (so stories published since can be marked as new), which desks you chose to follow, the clip you were watching so you can continue it, roughly how many times you have visited, and whether you declined or accepted the offer to add the site to your home screen (so it is not repeated). None of it is sent to us, and clearing your site data erases it.
  • A count of how many readers loved each story. Tapping the love button adds one to that story's total on our server. The request carries no name, no account and no visitor identifier — only which story was loved. Your own device remembers what you have already loved so the same person cannot count twice, and that list stays in your browser. Alongside each count we keep the time of the last tap on that story (not on a person); a total nobody has tapped for about thirty days may be cleared so the store stays small, and a fresh tap starts it again.
  • On the iOS or Android app only, and only if you allow notifications: a push token for that device, so we can send a news alert. It is an address for the phone, not your name.
  • On the website, only if you turn on breaking-news alerts with the bell in the header: your browser's push subscription — an anonymous endpoint address at your browser maker's push service and the keys needed to encrypt a message to it, not a name or an account — is stored so that an alert can be delivered. Turning alerts off with the same bell deletes it. Your device also remembers that alerts are on (nepalikura-push) so it can keep the connection alive on later visits.

The iOS and Android app

The Nepali Kura app shows the same headlines as the website. It has no account and no sign-in. Cards open here; the full story still lives at the publisher.

If you allow notifications, the app sends us an Expo push token so we can send a headline alert. Turning notifications off on the phone stops new tokens arriving. Write to the address below if you want a stored token removed.

Cookies and storage on your device

The site itself sets no tracking cookies. It stores your language and theme choice, which stories you have loved, which house advertisement you have already closed, and what the Entertainment tab has played so it can pick the next clip; those stay on your device. The only thing that leaves it is the love itself, as one anonymous addition to that story's public total. A separate httpOnly cookie is set only if someone signs in at the unpublished admin page, so the operator can upload a house advertisement, publish a feed card from a pasted link, and review feed cards (thumbs-up to boost similar stories, or reject a card so it is removed and the filter learns why it appeared); ordinary readers never receive it.

Advertising is different, and is described below: Google and its partners may place and read cookies in your browser, or use identifiers such as your IP address, when an advert is served.

Advertising

We show advertising through Google AdSense in a single banner above the page. There is no advertising in the feed, between stories, or at the bottom. From time to time we also show one of our own promotions as a short popup when you arrive — a picture or a short video, a line of text, and an optional link. It is labelled as advertising. Your device remembers which one you have already closed so the same campaign does not open again.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on those visits. Where other ad networks serve through Google, their cookies may be used in the same way.

You can turn off personalised advertising at any time, and doing so does not stop you using the site:

  • Opt out of personalised advertising by Google at google.com/settings/ads, and read how Google uses data from its partners' sites at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
  • Opt out of a wider set of third-party vendors at aboutads.info/choices or youronlinechoices.eu.
  • If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you are asked for consent before any advertising cookie is set, and you can change or withdraw that answer at any time.

Analytics

We use Vercel Analytics to count how many people read which channels. It sets no cookies, does not fingerprint your device, and does not follow you across other websites. What we see is aggregate — how many readers a channel had and roughly which countries they were in.

Other services your browser contacts

A news page necessarily loads material from elsewhere, and those servers can see your IP address as they would if you visited them directly:

  • The publishers whose photographs appear on the cards.
  • YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, when a video from that platform is on the page. Videos play here through each platform's official embed rather than sending you away; YouTube is embedded through youtube-nocookie.com. Once you press play, that platform may record the view against your account in the ordinary way, under its own privacy policy. The link beside the player opens the video at the source instead.
  • Google, for advertising, for the page's typeface, and for the small publisher logos beside each story's name; and flagcdn.com for the flag in the exchange-rate bar.

Where the stories come from

We aggregate headlines and short extracts from public RSS and video feeds, and from public social post links that reach us the same way, and link back to the original publisher, who holds the copyright and applies their own privacy policy once you follow a link. Every card names the outlet it came from. Headlines are rewritten between English and Nepali by a language model so they read like a newsdesk wrote them — only the published text of the card is sent, never anything about you.

Summaries are written from the article's own published text, in some cases by a language model we call for that purpose. Only the publisher's text is sent to it: no reader's identity, no address, nothing about who is reading or when. A summary is never a substitute for the article, and the full report always opens at the publisher.

Children

Nepali Kura is a general news service and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from them.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, UK GDPR, and laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act, you have the right to know what personal data is held about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to it being processed.

We hold no personal data about website readers. If you use the app and allow notifications, we hold a device push token so we can send an alert; if you turn on breaking-news alerts on the website, we hold your browser's anonymous push subscription, which the bell in the header deletes when you turn alerts off. Write to the address below to have either removed. Your rights against Google, in respect of the advertising cookies it sets, are exercised through the opt-out links above and through Google's own privacy policy. We do not sell or share personal information.

Changes to this policy

If what the site does changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top is updated.
